Omnibus

An omnibus (総集編 – Sōshūhen) in comics refers to a collection of multiple volumes or episodes of a series published in a single, large-format book. This term is primarily used in Western publishing, particularly for American comics by Marvel and DC, but the concept also exists for manga, where multiple tankobon are compiled into an omnibus edition.

This is especially relevant for long-running shonen manga with nearly endless serialization. Consider Shueisha’s Big Three: One Piece, Naruto, and Dragonb… just kidding guys, it’s Bleach. All three have received omnibus editions.

The biggest difference lies in production quality. While Western omnibus often feature high-quality printing, hardcover bindings, thicker paper, and come with a higher price tag, Japanese omnibus editions are typically produced with the same low-cost materials used for magazines like Shonen Jump to keep prices low. To spark readers’ interest then, exclusive bonuses like posters or variant covers are often included.
