Sunday GX

Monthly Sunday Gene-X (月刊サンデーGENE-X), often abbreviated as Sunday GX, is a Japanese seinen manga magazine published by Shogakukan since the year 2000. Its name reflects its original mission: to speak directly to Generation X, offering stories and themes that resonate with a slightly older, more niche audience. 

It primarily features manga, with minimal focus on general entertainment content like movies, anime, or gravure idols. This gives the publication a focused and mature tone, appealing to readers looking for storytelling over spectacle. 

A unique aspect of Sunday GX is its openness to new voices. Many of its contributors are writers and artists who debuted in other magazines or with different publishers, often bringing fresh ideas but little prior experience with serialization. This mix results in frequent suspensions or hiatuses of major series.

From 2006 to 2010, the magazine experienced a phase where gun action or “shooting manga” dominated its pages, reflecting both editorial experimentation and shifting reader interests during that time. 

In 2024, Sunday GX had a circulation of approximately 6.000 copies per issue, making it a highly niche publication. Its limited print run means that any special inserts like variant covers, tend to become rare collector’s items almost instantly. At its peak in the early 2000s, the magazine reached 40.000 copies per issue (source: Japanese Magazine Publishers Association – JMPA).
