Founded in 1954 by Max Théret and André Essel, the company originated as a members-only discount buyers’ club aimed at offering affordable prices on consumer goods. Over time, Fnac evolved into a prominent retailer, expanding its product range to include books, music, electronics, and household appliances.

As of 2023, Fnac operates 266 stores worldwide, with 141 in France, 35 in Spain, 34 in Portugal, 13 in Belgium, and 9 in Switzerland. The company maintains a significant presence in several countries, including Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Luxembourg, and has franchised stores in regions like Morocco, Qatar, and the Ivory Coast.

Fnac is highly active, frequently organizing events, discussion forums, and book fairs. It was one of the first French retail brands to recognize manga as an artistic product, partnering with publishers to offer exclusive variant covers in its stores and on its e-commerce platform. In fact, Fnac’s first exclusive cover dates back to 2015, with many more following over the years.
