Album was a historic comic book shop in the heart of Paris, specializing in manga and comics.

Though it expanded to several other locations over the years, its fame and legacy were tied to its iconic flagship store, which opened in 1948 in the center of the French capital, just steps away from Notre Dame Cathedral and the Cluny Museum. With eight grand windows lining one of the city’s busiest streets, the shop stood out strikingly with its deep blue storefront amidst the gray facades of historic Parisian buildings. It was a beloved fixture among Parisians and an essential destination for anyone passionate about comics.

However, declining business and rising rent forced Album to shut its doors in 2018. Not long after, it was acquired by its competitor, Momie, in the period following the pandemic. Reopened under new ownership, the store now operates as “Album Comics by Momie“, with a focus primarily on American comics.

I can’t help but compare Album to the Japanese convenience store chain Circle K Sunkus, not because they share the same fate of being absorbed by a competitor, but because of the legacy they’ve left behind regarding exceptionally rare cover variants.

Over the years, Album released a collection of exclusive covers that have cemented their place in the annals of French comic book history. These variants, each rarer than the last, have become coveted treasures for collectors, not just in France, but among hardcore fans worldwide.
